The NCDC owns the “Main Street Mills”—the granite, “trap rock” and concrete buildings at the north end of town, along Main Street and the riverfront. These mills were built over time, with the basic structures erected between 1824 and 1903. Of course, as with most industrial buildings, additions (to accommodate newer industrial processes) and reconstruction (to address the ravages of nature and fire) have created the mills you see today. Throughout history and into the present day, these mills dominate the northern streetscape and are truly the heart and soul of Newmarket. The pictures on these pages, courtesy of the New Market Historical Society, should give you a sense for the Mills' role in our town’s heritage.
